Why 2010 Will Be A White Knuckle Ride For Web Marketers

Next year may just prove to be one of the most challenging times for pursuing online or Internet marketing on the web. It may just be a watershed moment for many marketers struggling to keep abreast of all the different factors which have come into play in recent months. Most of these changes will stem from two main sources for potential upheaval: the first being the New FTC (Federal Trade Commission) Guidelines regarding Testimonials and Endorsements and the second being “ALL” the recent changes within Google.

Actually, we already have the new FTC Guidelines which came into effect on Dec. 1st of 2009, but how these new rules are enforced will play out in the coming year as test-cases are brought to court. Basically, these new rules call for absolute disclosure and full transparency regarding Testimonials and Endorsements when a product or service is being offered for sale. Any business (monetary) relationship between the endorser and the company must be made known to the potential buyer. Obviously for those in online or affiliate marketing this could have a great impact if these new rules are strictly enforced. Just imagine all the website owners and bloggers who slap a few banners or affiliate links on their sites to cover hosting or operating costs… will they now have to disclose all these business arrangements? In your consulting business, chances are you have spent a lot of time thinking about the specific services you can provide to clients. You’ve probably spent a great deal of time and effort working on processes, so that when clients come to you you’re able to provide them real solutions.

Unfortunately, many solo professionals don’t put the same kind of time and thought into their marketing message. They put up a website, perhaps, that goes into great detail about how it is they can solve their clients’ problems. Then, they can’t understand why no one is buying.

It’s the thing that will convince potential customers that you have the answer to their problem. The success of your business will, ultimately, depend greatly on how clear and effective your core marketing message is. Continue reading “Identifying a Marketing Message that Works” »

Good SEO Practices

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is an interesting topic. There are a lot of ways people claim you can improve your search results. Some of them work. Some just don’t. The problem is that there is one real search engine everyone always focuses on; Google. And Google is pretty secretive about how they rank websites.

At first their algorithms were pretty straight-forward. If you linked to a bunch of other sites and inject hordes of keywords in your <body> then you would likely move upward in ranking. But then black-hat search engine optimizers figured out that Google was doing this. These optimizers began to use it to their advantage. You may recall, years ago, coming across a page that seemed to have an obscene amount of ‘dead space’ at the bottom of the page. These optimizers would place large amounts of keywords usually using the same color as the background to hide them.

Long story short Google has continually caught on to optimizers taking advantage of their ranking algorithms and have tweaked them to avoid these types of situations, thus enforcing legitimate results. So, over time Google has become very cryptic as to how they rank sites. By leaving optimizers in the dark they are avoiding any misuse of their service. Yet, there are some well-known ways in which you can improve your pages to improve their ranking. This is what I will be covering for the remainder of this post.
